Montaione - Firenze in Toscana
Il castello prese nome da Allone di Lucca, essendo citato in antiche carte come "Mons Allonis", poi corretto in "Montaione". Comune già nel 1257, Montaione fu coinvolto nelle guerre fra San Gimignano, Volterra e San Miniato, ma gravitò prevalentemente nell’orbita di Firenze. Fin dal 1200 si esercitò in Montaione l’arte della lavorazione del vetro, diffusa in seguito in tutta la Valdelsa. Oggi Montaione è una cittadina tranquilla, con il suo caratteristico centro storico ben conservato, raccolto in un semplice impianto urbanistico attraversato da tre strade di spina fra loro parallele, convergenti alle estremità delle porte; purtroppo ben poco rimane dell’antica cinta muraria, distrutta per la maggior parte dalle mine tedesche nel 1944 insieme alle porte e alle torri. Notevole è il Palazzo Pretorio (secolo XIV) sulla cui facciata spiccano numerosi stemmi: oggi è sede della Biblioteca Comunale e del Museo di Storia Naturale.
