Au XVIII siècle, Autrichiens, Allemands, Anglais et Français se disputèrent l’île d’Elbe avec de frénétiques négociations diplomatiques ou des batailles acharnées jusqu’à ce qu’elle ne fut attribuée “ de pleine propriété et souveraineté” à Napoléon Bonaparte qui, en dix mois de gouvernement, laissa des traces significatives: il construisit des routes, réorganisa l’économie minière, augmenta la production et l’exportation du vin.
