Case torri e palazzi - Pisa in Toscana
Il centro storico di Pisa è caratterizzato dalla massiccia presenza di edifici abitativi e mercantili che, per lo sviluppo in verticale, sono comunemente appellati “case-torri”. Tra il XII ed il XIII secolo si affermò questo tipo di dimora signorile, caratterizzato da una successione in verticale dei vani, che raggiungevano normalmente quattro-cinque solai e quindi altezze di 14/18 metri. Le torri avevano un fronte su strada stretto ed una consistente profondità; ogni solaio aveva al massimo due stanze. In questo periodo si pensa che sorgessero nella Pisa medievale circa 5.000 torri.
Nel corso del XIII secolo lo spazio urbano venne sfruttato sempre più intensamente: le torri vennero in molti casi innalzate, mentre si iniziò a costruire gli edifici “a schiera”, con muri comuni.
