The saltworks of Volterra were documented in 1014 when the emperor Henry II approved the delivery of the properties donated by the bishop Benedetto to his canons. When the three medieval churches were destroyed at the end of the 14th century, the territory was shared between Sant’Alessandro and Fatagliano. The parish church was re-founded in 1787 and the church was consecrated in 1790.
Both the interior and the exterior consist of an 18th-century part and a modern one. The façade and the first part of the nave belong to the construction dedicated to St. Leopold, while the rear and the bell tower, provided with a symbolic jet-tail gable, are by the architects Remo and Carla Baroni. The interior houses an altar dedicated to “The Virgin of the Solace”, the effigy which encouraged the Tuscans to get rid of the French in 1799 and is celebrated every year in the first week of October.
