Albano Vercellese - Vercelli in Piemonte
Il toponimo deriva forse da Albanus, nome d’un martire della legione tebea; dell’epoca romana resta una tegola con iscrizione funeraria. Dal X secolo, sotto l’episcopato di Attone, Albano risulta tra le pievi della chiesa eusebiana, il possesso al Vescovo vercellese fu confermato coi diplomi imperiali di Ottone III (999) e di Federico Barbarossa ( 1152) fino al 1178, quando una parte venne ceduta al Comune di Vercelli. Dopo esser stata proprietà di varie famiglie (Arborio, Blandrenis, Florio, Rota, Donna, de Albano) nel 1335 Albano passò ai Visconti fino al subentrare dei Savoia (1407). Nel 1621, per volere del duca Carlo Emanuele I, Albano (insieme ad Oldenico e Cascine San Giacomo) fu eretta contea di Mercurio Arborio di Gattinara, gran cancelliere di Carlo V d’Asburgo.
